what does elope mean?

I get asked this quite a bit, what does elope mean? What’s the difference between and elopement and a wedding? Can we elope anywhere?

Eloping traditionally means getting married without telling anyone, especially family and friends. This often involves a sudden and secretive departure to avoid any objections or complications from loved ones. In contemporary contexts, eloping can also refer to a more private, intimate wedding ceremony that doesn’t include a large number of guests, even if the couple doesn’t keep it a secret.

Eloping started in Scotland

The concept of eloping has historical ties to Scotland, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. One famous location associated with elopements is Gretna Green, a village just over the border from England. During that time, English law required couples to be at least 21 years old to marry without parental consent, while Scottish law allowed marriage without parental consent at a younger age, with the minimum age being 16.

The romantic bit…

As a result, many young English couples would “elope” to Scotland to marry quickly and without the need for parental approval. Gretna Green, being the first village across the border, became synonymous with these runaway marriages, with blacksmiths and other locals often officiating the ceremonies. This historical context has contributed to the romantic and adventurous connotations of eloping.

Can I elope anywhere in Scotland?

Yes, Scotland is the only place in the UK that you can elope anywhere, as long as you follow the legal requirements for marriage in the country. Here are the steps and considerations for eloping in Scotland:

  1. Notice of Marriage: Both parties must submit a marriage notice to the registry office in the district where you intend to marry. This must be done at least 29 days before the wedding, but it is recommended to allow 6-8 weeks to ensure all paperwork is processed in time.

  2. Marriage Schedule: Once the notices are processed, the registry office will prepare a marriage schedule, which is a document that authorizes the marriage to take place. This must be collected in person by one of the parties at the registry office before the ceremony.

  3. Legal Officiant: You need to have an authorized officiant to conduct the ceremony. This can be a registrar from the local council or a religious officiant who is authorized to perform marriages in Scotland. I have a list of some brilliant ones I have had the pleasure of working with.

  4. Witnesses: Scottish law requires at least two witnesses to be present at the ceremony. These witnesses must be at least 16 years old. I have had the pleasure of not only being the photographer but also a witness to many of my couples elopements.

  5. Location: You can choose any location for your elopement in Scotland, including outdoor venues like beaches, forests, mountains, or historic sites. Many people opt for romantic or scenic spots such as castles, lochs, or even remote countryside locations.

  6. Returning the Marriage Schedule: After the ceremony, the signed marriage schedule must be returned to the registry office within three days to have the marriage officially registered.

Popular Elopement Locations in Scotland

  • Gretna Green: Famous for runaway marriages.

  • Isle of Skye: Known for its dramatic landscapes.

  • Edinburgh: Offers historic sites like Edinburgh Castle or intimate settings in its beautiful gardens.

  • Highlands: Provides stunning natural backdrops.

  • Lochs: Loch Lomond and Loch Ness are popular for their beauty.

Planning Tips

  • Hire a Local Planner: Consider hiring a local wedding planner to help navigate legal requirements and logistics. I have a list of some lovely ones I have worked with ion you would like some recommendations.

  • Weather Considerations: Be prepared for Scotland’s unpredictable weather, especially if you plan to marry outdoors.

By following these steps, you can enjoy a romantic and legally recognized elopement anywhere in Scotland.

Morning Prep At Loch Green House Hotel

From the very beginning of the morning, Kyla was absolutely buzzing. Her energy was infectious as she shouted “Happy my wedding day!”, barely able to sit still and desperate to get into her dress. More than anything, she couldn’t wait to see her beloved dad, George, and share that moment together.

Kyla looked incredible in her gown from Ivory Pinks Bridal, glowing with happiness from the inside out. Her excitement was contagious , the kind that fills a room and makes everyone smile.

As a school teacher, Kyla has the warmest energy, and it was clear how loved she is by those around her. She shares a close bond with her sister, and together with Fraser, they’re proud dog parents to Watson, who definitely got a few mentions throughout the day.
Fraser spent the morning with his groomsmen in great spirits, including one who had flown all the way from Australia to be there. It set the tone for the day: relaxed, full of laughter, and rooted in genuine friendships.

There was a deep emotional thread running through the day. Kyla’s mum, Shiela, sadly passed away in 2022, and her presence was felt in so many quiet, meaningful ways. This wedding wasn’t just a celebration, it was a hugely important moment for Kyla and her family, full of love, remembrance, and pride.

With We Are Tartan keeping the dancefloor packed and Shades of Sax bringing the saxophone energy, the evening celebrations were next level. Euan could create a party in an empty room! He doesn’t stop smiling and bringing the energy, throw in the fact he is just a lovely guy, he makes you feel like you are in a club in ibiza with constant good music and dancing. From emotional moments to absolute dancefloor chaos, the atmosphere was incredible.

Kyla and Fraser’s wedding was joyful, heartfelt, and full of life , an absolute privilege to photograph.

work with me

I'm a fine art photographer for the adventurous and the romantic, I am based in Glasgow in Scotland. I have been described as an 'artistic' photographer by others and this probably sums up my work quite well. I have had my work featured on Vogue Italia, We Fell in Love, My lovely Scottish Wedding, US Blog Ruffled Wedding Blog and many more..

About me

Hello There! Thanks For Stopping By. I Am Roma

I like old movies and new friends. I'm a hopeless romantic, my favourite movies are Gone with the Wind and pretty much most films directed by Baz Luhrmann. I was brought up on alot of Disney which is most likely where my happily ever after streak has grown from! I am a huge animal lover and have an unhealthy obsession with anything pirate themed and Audrey Hepburn.

FAQS

How Far In Advance Should We Book?

Since I take on a limited number of weddings per year, no more than 25, I encourage couples to book as early as possible to secure their date. Most couples book 12–18 months ahead, but if your wedding is sooner, still get in touch I sometimes have space for last-minute dates.

Do You Travel Outside Glasgow?

Yes, I photograph weddings across Scotland (and beyond). Travel fees apply for longer distances, but I’ll always be clear about these upfront. I am frequently up in the highlands for weddings and also travel down to the lake district aswell.

Do You Shoot Elopements As Well As Full Weddings?

Absolutely. Elopements are some of my favourites, full of emotion, freedom and atmosphere. Plus I do love getting outdoors in amongst the stunning scenery and dodging the midges.

How Many Images Will We Receive?

For a full day, expect around 600–800 carefully edited images all in my signature romantic style, in both colour and black and white.

What Is Your Editing Style?

Happy, romantic, fun and light just as your day should be.

I don’t follow photography trends as I love to create photographs that are timeless, classic and romantic. So that in 10 years time you will still look back and love them without them looking dated.

I find the couples who book me have similar traits to me. Chilled with a good sense of humor. Who adore their families and want this love captured.

What If It Rains On Your Wedding Day?

Scotland’s weather can be unpredictable, but it always adds character. I’ll guide you to make the most of the light and conditions, rain often brings the most atmospheric images! We can have fun and go full on notebook vibes! You cant control the weather but you can control how you behave towards it on your day, instead of being sad that you didn’t get full on sunshine, embrace the fact all your guests will stay inside together and party hard!

How Long Does It Take To Receive Our Photos?

You’ll get a small preview within 48 hours, and your full gallery within 6–8 weeks.

What’s Included In Your Full-Day Coverage?

From morning prep to at least three dances into the evening (or until the dance floor gets really wild!), I am basically yours for the day.

What If We Want Video Or Extra Coverage?

There’s a package (Blue Moon Rose) that includes a highlight film. Also, you can add a second shooter, or extra hours, or special print or album options.

Can We Order Albums Or Prints?

Yes, and I encourage it. There’s nothing like seeing your story beautifully printed , something to pass down and relive for years. I hate the photos hidden on hard drives so include 15 complimentary prints in my full day packages.

Can We Book An Engagement Shoot To Be Included In Our Wedding Photography Package?

Absolutely, this is a great idea as it means you get to have a practice before the big day and instead of spending months worrying about having your photos taken, you will see how easy and relaxed the whole process is, plus it means we won’t feel like strangers by the time the wedding comes.

I specialize in natural, candid photography so nothing is too posed. Just get not touch and we can chat about what package would suit you best.

Is It Possible To Hire A Wedding Photographer In Glasgow Who Also Does Videography?

Yes, I shoot hybrid so that means I not only capture your photos but also capture snippets of video too and edit this into a highlight reel. This package is ideal for couples who hate being center stage as its only me and you won’t notice me taking video aswell.
