Scottish castles are often considered romantic venues for weddings due to several reasons:
Many Scottish castles boast rich histories dating back centuries, evoking a sense of timeless romance. Couples are drawn to the idea of exchanging vows in a place steeped in history and tradition and can feel like you are stepping back in time for a day.
Scottish castles are renowned for their breathtaking architecture, featuring turrets, battlements, and picturesque landscapes. These features provide a stunning backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photographs, adding to the romantic atmosphere.
You can’t beat our landscapes! Scotland’s landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from rugged mountains to serene lochs and rolling hills. Many castles are situated in picturesque locations, offering breathtaking views that enhance the romantic ambiance of the wedding day.
Getting married in a castle can feel like stepping into a fairytale. The grandeur of the surroundings, along with the sense of history and mystery, contributes to the feeling of escapism that many couples seek for their special day.
Renting a castle for a wedding often provides couples with exclusive use of the venue, allowing them to create a personalized and intimate celebration surrounded by family and friends.
Scotland has a rich cultural heritage, including traditions such as bagpipe music, Highland dancing, and tartan attire. Incorporating these elements into a castle wedding can add a sense of authenticity and cultural significance to the event. Hand fasting ceremonies are a lovely addition to the wedding and you can even have owls deliver rings at some venues like Dalhousie castle.
The uniqueness of a castle wedding creates lasting memories for both the couple and their guests. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that stands out from more traditional wedding venues, making it a truly memorable occasion.
Overall, the combination of history, architecture, natural beauty, and cultural significance makes Scottish castles an irresistible choice for couples seeking a romantic and unforgettable wedding venue.

Melville Castle is an 18th-century Gothic-style mansion located near Dalkeith, Midlothian, approximately 6 miles south of Edinburgh. Designed by architect James Playfair between 1786 and 1791 for Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, the castle is set within a 54-acre private estate along the North Esk River.
Historical Background:
-
Early Ownership: The original tower house on the site was owned by the Melville family before passing to Sir John Ross in the 14th century. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times, eventually being acquired by David Rannie in 1705. Through marriage to Rannie’s daughter, Elizabeth, Henry Dundas came into possession of the property.
-
Later Developments: Post-World War II, the castle served various purposes, including as an army rehabilitation center and later as a hotel. After a period of disuse in the early 1980s, the Hay Trust purchased and restored the property, reopening it as a hotel in 2003. Today, Melville Castle operates as a luxury hotel and wedding venue.
The castle boasts 11 individually styled bedrooms, including a Bridal Suite and a Wedding Suite, accommodating up to 21 guests.

Morning Prep At Loch Green House Hotel
From the very beginning of the morning, Kyla was absolutely buzzing. Her energy was infectious as she shouted “Happy my wedding day!”, barely able to sit still and desperate to get into her dress. More than anything, she couldn’t wait to see her beloved dad, George, and share that moment together.
Kyla looked incredible in her gown from Ivory Pinks Bridal, glowing with happiness from the inside out. Her excitement was contagious , the kind that fills a room and makes everyone smile.
As a school teacher, Kyla has the warmest energy, and it was clear how loved she is by those around her. She shares a close bond with her sister, and together with Fraser, they’re proud dog parents to Watson, who definitely got a few mentions throughout the day.
Fraser spent the morning with his groomsmen in great spirits, including one who had flown all the way from Australia to be there. It set the tone for the day: relaxed, full of laughter, and rooted in genuine friendships.
There was a deep emotional thread running through the day. Kyla’s mum, Shiela, sadly passed away in 2022, and her presence was felt in so many quiet, meaningful ways. This wedding wasn’t just a celebration, it was a hugely important moment for Kyla and her family, full of love, remembrance, and pride.
An Unforgettable Party At Lochgreen House Hotel
With We Are Tartan keeping the dancefloor packed and Shades of Sax bringing the saxophone energy, the evening celebrations were next level. Euan could create a party in an empty room! From emotional moments to absolute dancefloor chaos, the atmosphere was incredible.
